Kiran Bedi, born on June 9, 1949, in Amritsar, Punjab, is a pioneering Indian police officer, social activist, former tennis player. She is widely known for her groundbreaking contributions to law enforcement, her commitment to social justice, and her advocacy for women's empowerment. Bedi made history in 1972 when she became the first woman to join the IPS, a male-dominated field at the time. Throughout her distinguished career, she served in various capacities, including as the Inspector General of Prisons in Tihar Jail, one of India's largest prisons, where she implemented innovative reforms to improve conditions and promote rehabilitation. One of her most notable achievements was her transformative leadership at Tihar Jail, where she introduced educational programs, vocational training and meditation practices to rehabilitate inmates and reduce recidivism rates. Her efforts earned her international acclaim, inspired similar reforms in prisons around the world. Beyond her work in law enforcement, Bedi is also known for her activism and advocacy on a wide range of social issues, including women's rights, education, and corruption. She has been a vocal proponent of gender equality, often speaking out against gender-based violence,discrimination and advocating for greater opportunities for women in all spheres of society. Her fearless commitment to justice and integrity has earned her numerous accolades and honors, including the Ramon Magsaysay Award, often referred to as Asia's Nobel Prize, for her exemplary public service.
